It is well known that different layers of tissue quench light signal by scattering and absorption. This has been always considered a limitation to the  possibility of visualizing a probe in the most inner organs. Mayes and colleagues, conversely, exploited the scattering of fluorescent light emitted from tumor cells as it passes through blood vessels between the tumor cells and the detection source and... they detected, identified, and measured a «distinct spectral emission signature» of blood vessels present in fluorescent tumors. Theoretically, any single layer of cell contributes to the overall scatter, and you need to know its spectral signature to deconvolve it. Worth to note, spectral unmixing may be useful also to gain a 3D tomography of fluorescence or bioluminescence imaging.
